Inspiration is like a reading a bad novel. You buy this book, right? You think "Hey, this looks like it can be pretty good". Then you read it. You read it and you can't stand the sight of it. The author had these good characters that could have went somewhere, yet all the potential was wasted on a cliched plot and bad story decisions. Not to mention the ending leaves a lot to be desired.
So after you put down the thing, you go. "Wow, I could totally do better than that". So you start to write your own novel.
So you start writing your novel. You don't know if it will be good, whether it will be bad, or whether it will be forever defined as the worst piece of human literature, but you feel pretty good while writing it. You're on the top of the world, and that's really all that matters.
That's what inspiration is to me. Inspiration is when you take something from your life, be it a bad novel, awesome tv show, or a weird video game experience, and you take it and it makes you stand up. It makes you stand up and say, "I want to do SOMETHING." The thing, person, or place makes you feel like you can do anything you set your mind to. That thing, person, or place gives you the drive to get through the day. That noun gives the extra push you need to shovel through all the crap in your life and make it better, and someone else's life fantastic.
It really doesn't matter where, what, or who inspires you, but if makes you WANT to do something AMAZING, then it counts as inspiration to me.
Take Deadpool for example. I love Deadpool. I love Deadpool so much, he and his subject material inspired me to want to write my own little short stories about a wild mercenary doing wild and insane stunts. Deadpool inspired me to create something.
Now take {Name Redacted}. {Name Redacted} was, in my opinion, a HORRIBLE teacher. I hardly learned anything in {Name Redacted}'s class and that time of the day was the time of the day that I despised the most. However in hindsight, I may have to thank {Name Redacted} because they made me think "I could be a better teacher than this person". {Name Redacted}'s horrible class partly helped me sign up for teacher cadet, because I believed I could do a better job.
And that, is Inspiration-ism.
Check it and spec it.
I really like your style of writing Zach. Great article; a lot of good sources of inspiration brought up here. Keep up the good work, and stay better than Mr. and Mrs. Redacted. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt is rewarding to find inspiration from various things in life. I am not familiar with Deadpool, but I will be sure to sit down and discuss this with you! Sounds interesting! I am also so interested in what {Name Redacted} did to cause you to feel the way that you do...although, I am glad they inspired you to become fond of the profession :)
